STOMP Returns to Houston, 1/25-27

STOMP, the international percussion sensation, returns to Houston for four performances on Friday, Jan. 25 (8 p.m.), Saturday, Jan. 26 (2 & 8 p.m.) and Sunday, Jan. 27 (2 p.m.) in Jones Hall.

STOMP uses everything but conventional percussion instruments - sinks, newspapers, matches, trash bins, lighters, brooms and more - to fill the stage with a compelling, funny and unique performance that is often imitated, but never duplicated. Throughout its life, the show has continued to change by creating new material. This return engagement will include two new routines.

From its beginnings as a street performance in the UK, STOMP has grown into an international sensation over the past 20 years, having performed in more than 50 countries and in front of more than 24 million people. Created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, STOMP continues its phenomenal run with four global productions: the ongoing sell-out production at New York's Orpheum Theatre, a permanent London company, and North American and European tours.

The performers "make a rhythm out of anything we can get our hands on that makes a sound," says co-founder/director Luke Cresswell. A unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy, STOMP has created its own inimitable, contemporary form of rhythmic expression - household and industrial objects find new life as musical instruments in the hands of an idiosyncratic band of body percussionists. It is a journey through sound, a celebration of the everyday and a comic interplay of characters wordlessly communicating through dance and drum.

STOMP is the winner of an Olivier Award for Best Choreography, a New York Obie Award, a Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatre Experience and a Special Citation from Best Plays, in addition to an Academy Award nomination, four Emmy nominations and one Emmy Award for their acclaimed HBO special Stomp Out Loud. Noteworthy TV appearances include The London 2012 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony, "The 68th Annual Academy Awards" (produced by Quincy Jones), "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," and a series of award-winning international commercials.

Tickets range from $35-$80 and can be purchased online at www.spahouston.org, by phone at 713-227-4772 or at the courtyard level ticket office at Jones Hall located at 615 Louisiana St. Hours of operation: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday - Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. For groups of 15 or more call 713-632-8113.

Part of SPA's Citi Family Fun Series, this performance is generously sponsored by The Mithoff Family Foundation, Reliant Energy, BMC Software, H-E-B and United.
